North Queensland vs Far North Queensland: a clarifier.
A friend asked me on Twitter where the border between North and Far North Queensland is. People unfamiliar with the place use the two geographical descriptions quite loosely, which has never seemed important until this very moment.
The thing is that it’s loose in local usage too, but there are some definite no-nos.
The trouble is, North Queensland is sometimes used (even by locals) to describe the whole bit of the state north of about Sarina (just south of Mackay). Various sporting bodies etc treat the whole area as one region called North Queensland.
Far North Queensland is more precise: it will generally only be used to describe the part of the state north from about Cardwell on the coast.
What NEVER happens is local people calling Townsville Far North Queensland, let alone Bowen, Proserpine Mackay etc.
Wikipedia has a good discussion of all this.
This may help in clarifying what you’re hearing on live broadcasts, etc, from the region.
